Description |
La Carreta de la Muerta (The Death Cart). Author Ruben E. Archuleta writes in his book /Penitente Renaissance: Manifesting Hope/: "La Carreta de la Muerte: (The Death Cart) is often protrayed with Dona Sebastiana riding it. It generally symbolizes Jesus' victory over Death, but the broader meaning is a reminder that we must always be prepared for death. Dona Sebastiana is sometimes depicted holding a bow and arrow, an axe, a spear, or a scythe. A person must lead a good exemplary life because no one knows when the arrow might be released and peirce the heart. A full-sized cart was used by some Hermanos while doing their penance by filling the cart with heavy stones and pulling it with crude harnesses" (42). La Carreta de la Muerte in the museum's collection is complete. Upon donation, the artifact came with a wooden table for which to place it. It appears that the hair of the Dona Sebastiana may be made from from horse hair and the sculpture has an arrow. The cloak is made from cotton and the wood is ash.
