Description |
A matraca. The matraca is a ritual instrument used by the Penitente to produce sound during processions and when worshipping. When the handle is twisted, the matraca reverberates a loud clattering and clicking sound. The instrument is used particularly during Holy Week's tinieblas. Ruben Archuleta, author of /Penitente Renaissance: Manifesting Hope/ writes, "matracas were crafted from any material available including vegetable crates, nails, and metal tubing for handles (40-42). The matraca in the museum's collection is made from wood, possibly vegetable crates, but there is no produce label. There are no metal handles.
